Open Control Architectures

Lund Institute of Technology, Department of Computer Science, SDE Research

Klas Nilsson

Manufacturing systems are complex systems including control and programming of individual machines, production cells, and complete manufacturing systems. A key issue for Swedish industry is to achieve high productivity in such systems. Technically, this means that both efficiency and flexibility should be accomplished on different levels of the system. Together with our industrial partners, ABB Robotics Products and ABB Corporate Research, we have investigated the need for open modular controllers, which deserves a dedicated research effort. This project will involve collaboration with other disciplines such as Automatic Control, but the main focus is on the software aspects.
